  •  Experience matters. But experiences do not mean how many years the person has worked rather the type of work he has done and the websites he has worked on determines his/her experience. If the SEO has worked on different types of websites he/she would know more than the one who has worked for 5 years but on the same kinds of sites.
  • Get them to talk about their experience. SEO experts love to brag about their projects and the challenges they have faced over time. Talk to them about these experiences, this will give you an overall sense of their work and how they like to do it.
  • Check for references. Talk about them with other experts and developers since this will give you a pretty good insight into their work.

Do not risk hiring a cheap SEO:

This is true in most cases and can lead to a loss that is worth way more than what you would normally pay for a good SEO expert or agency. This is common sense and most will probably agree that a cheap SEO would neither be contributing his/her complete-time nor his/her undivided attention to the betterment of your website rather he/she would probably look for better work and end up leaving you and your website in a haze.

This point especially comes in handy when you are interviewing a bunch of different experts. With their answers, you can derive a general sense of what most SEO experts think about their fields and you can even use their answers to reason with them in the future if the need arises.

Ask them about their process:

According to Google’s guide on how to hire an SEO, it takes between four months to a year for an SEO to optimize your website and generate as much traffic as it can. Of course, this process varies from person to person. Some experts tend to approach it differently while others tend to stick to the default-agenda.

It is essential to ask the SEO about his/her process and how they intend to approach the matter. Make them guide you on their own method. Make notes and compare them with other SEO experts that you met and mark the points that you like and create a mindset about the approach you would prefer.

Measurement of success in an SEO’s eyes:

It is important to get an idea of what determines the success of your website in an SEO’s mind. Most SEO’s depend on Google Analytics where they analyze the quality of search you are getting and how often you are getting it.

You should urge your SEO expert or agency to hold conference calls and meetings at least once in a month to track the progress of your website. Specify a set of goals to be achieved and make sure to achieve them in due time although there is no need to panic if you can’t. The point is to be aware of the situation and to make sure your SEO is too.

Conducting an SEO audit:

An SEO audit can prove to be pretty useful in determining and diagnosing the problems in your website. Although the audit requires some tools and practices still it can be a great way to test an SEO expert or agency before hiring.

You will also have to give the SEO’s your Google Search Console access and Google Analytics account so that they are fully equipped with the data needed to run the audit. It is customary that the SEO expert after conducting the audit will have to deliver a detailed report of the process. The report needs to be comprehensive and should include the following details.

  • The issue(s).
  • The suggested improvement(s).
  • An estimate of the total investment.
  • Estimate positive business impact.
  • Plan of how to improve on implementation.

Decide if you want to hire or not:

After conducting all the necessary analyses and measures, it is time to decide whether you want to hire a particular SEO or not. Before making any decisions, make sure that your whole crew is on board, make sure that you go over all the contract details if, in the future, you decide to leave the agency. Without internal co-operation and initial planning, you may not be able to see any progress at all or yet worse you may have to face some losses.
